Old Age Mental Health

Anxiety and mood disorders:

Anxiety and depression are the most common disorders in adults as well as in elderly. These disorders could worsen the general medical condition of elderly people, in addition to the poor quality of life. Fear of falling, disability and death are among the commonest fear for elderly people.

Behavior problems:

When an elderly person starts showing changes in his/her personality (becoming aggressive or restless unlike the usual pattern of personality) it is usually a sign of brain dysfunction that requires urgent assessment. It might be part of cognitive disorder or delirium (change of conscious level).

Memory problems:

Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. However, in certain occasions the extent and type of memory problem could be a worrying sign for developing a cognitive disorder (a group of disorders concerning mental abilities like memory and concentration). You may start noticing that it is taking you longer to learn new things, remembering information as well as you used to, or start losing things like your keys, phone, or glasses. This could be highly anxiety provoking and you may start getting angry or irritable. You may also start feeling sad and you prefer to spend time alone. It is important to differentiate between the normal changes that could occur with aging and the cognitive disorders like Dementia. Scientific evidences have found that early detection and intervention can slow down progression of illness and provide better response to treatment. So, if in doubt about the memory performance of yourself or your loved senior relatives it is better to do an assessment.
